Written in the mode of The Last Picture Show, this nonfiction book is an amusing portrayal of mid-twentieth century life in a place The Washington Post called the "archetypal company town" in 1972. Anecdotes that describe such adventures as live B-B gun shootouts, football-frenzied Friday nights, and stealing the accessories for a homemade pool table capture the Happy Days flavor of a bygone era. Other episodes recount such not-so-happy experiences as contending with aggressive rats on the graveyard shift at a dry ice plant, making do minus an outhouse after every Halloween, and surviving a bizarre year at a military college. Readers aren't likely to soon forget the colorful cast of characters ranging from the author's eccentric family members to high-spirited locals.

....unaware of the book until someone's post in Facebook caught my attention, I enjoyed so much this trip down memory lane. I was drawn by one of the last sentences referencing that the author didn't realize at the time just how special growing up in Saltville and R.B. Worthy was. On our class graduation day 50 years ago..yes, this will be our year to celebrate that...I knew somehow that our experiences were extraordinary and that life would never be so fun and so easy ever again. Only partly wrong, I have experienced magnificent highs and dismal lows, the joy of children and grandchildren that is beyond expression, yet it still does not take much to bring back all those emotions and feelings captured in this book. Thank you, Ron Coulthard for the joy of being there once again.

I loved the book but I lived there and lived the same adventures and knew the same people. Ron Coulthard and I are roughly the same age and I can identify with many of the stories and adventures and misadventures he brings out in his book. Saltville Virginia was the model of a company town. Olin Mathieson was the company and they owned just about everything and provided just about everything including hospitals and schools. If you or your parents worked for Olin, then health care and housing and the company store were your rights. Free schooling, free health care and more. Unfortunately, they were a company that polluted the river and land and in the end paid dearly for their acts and are still paying and will for many years to come. Saltville was compared to the Love Canal when it came to pollution. A fun read even if you are not from Saltville.
Very entertaining and funny stories. Perfect for a weekend read. You just can't make this stuff up. Highly Recommended. Will take you back to your childhood.
I am familiar with the company town and the author. I enjoyed the book as it brought back many memories of a happy and care free time of my life.
Mr. Coulthard made me laugh and visualize his antics as a young boy growing up in Saltville, Virginia. I appreciated his honesty about his family and friends. I hope he will continue to write down all the stories that he loves to tell.
I enjoyed the author's realistic account of growing up in Saltville, a town that I was introduced to during my high school days. His use of humor made the hard times of his youth both enjoyable and memorable. I recommend this book.
